Top Ten List

1. Cites like Naples are ruled by kings and these rulers had absolute power, and in the Tempest Alonso is king. There are different ways that kings can come to power one way is through family line and another way is war. However the king comes to power is not important but what is important is sustaining that power. The king can do that by having children so there will be an heir to the thrown when he passes away. Although there have been queens it is a kings greatest desire to have a son to rule. Ferdinand was Alonso's son and therefore next in line for the throne in Naples.

2.
Many of the marriages in the 1600's were organized by the parents with little input from the young bride and groom. It was legal for a girl as young as 12 to be married but most where in their mid-20s. I find it odd that after two hours of knowing each other Ferdinand and Miranda want to get married, but in reality is not at all odd for this time because the bride and groom usually didn't know each other that well.

3. During the movie version of The Tempest Ferdinand is dressed like most royals of this time dressed. There were a few key pieces to his outfit which include hoes, smock, and a cod piece. The smock is what separates the royal from other people because the royals add embellishmentsand jewels that only they could afford. Hoes could be any style or color according to my research there is not specific colors that royalty wore. The cod piece is the front flap worn by men to protect their crotch.
4. A high priority for any prince was to find a wife and a common way to do this was to hold a ball and invite all the eligible women in the area. So during these balls Ferdinand would have met numerous women, maybe even hundreds. Even after meeting these women he found faults in all of them which is pretty remarkable.

5.
As the prince of Naples Ferdinand very rarely has to do anything challenging or strenuous. While growing up in Naples Ferdinand most likely had countless slaves that bring him whatever he needs or wants. When Prospero asks him to fetch wood he tells him no, but Prospero does not accept this answer. Ferdinand ends up caring the wood even though he protests.

6. In The Tempest Ferdinand and Miranda play chess. This was a common game during this time period. Solitaire, backgammon, and checkers were also common games that where played by both children and adults.

7. Ferdinand has a sister in The Tempest although she has no speaking part she is important to the story. She represents what happened a lot to women in the 1600s and that was that she was married to gain something not for love. Her father married her off to someone in Africa so that he could have an ally. It says in the play that she wanted to resist the marriage but didn't to please her father.

8. Ferdinand is a very naive person. He is quick to trust and believe what he hears. This is most likely due to the fact that he has been somewhat shut off from the world. He lived a very sheltered life and doesn't know or understand what goes on outside his world and therefore he is quick to trust.

9. When the story ends Prospero's says that they will head back to Naples so that Ferdinand and Miranda can be married. There ceremony would be lavish because Ferdinand is prince. The whole town would gather. The couple might be married on Sunday because that is said to be the luckiest day to be married. Another tradition that they might have is a ribbon that is tied to show the unity of the bride and groom

10. Prospero gives Ferdinand and Miranda an amazing wedding gift when he calls the goddesses to bless them. He calls Juno who is the queen of the sky, Ceres who is the goddess of agriculture, and Iris who is the goddess of rainbows. These goddesses were all selected by Prospero to bring there specific blessings to the couple.

Ferdinand's monologue

I chose the song My Girl by the Temptations because it’s a fun and upbeat song that I could imagine Ferdinand singing to Miranda. The song isn’t very deep just like Ferdinand and Miranda’s love.

I used the colors blue and gold on this page because I think that gold represents royalty and blue represents youthfulness.

This picture represents Ferdinand because he is a young prince. He is very naive and has seen very little in his life time.
heart.jpg
This heart represents the love Ferdinand has for Miranda. There is discussion whether or not the love they have is lasting or if it simply just happened because they were both lonely.
silver_spoon.jpg
This sliver spoon represents Ferdinand's very privileged childhood. He grew up the prince so everything was handed to him and he never had to work for anything.

These rings represent Ferdinand and Miranda’s promise to each other to get married. Miranda was the first to propose and Ferdinand accepted. They plan to go back to Naples and get married there.
